Lymphatic drainage massage
Lymphatic drainage massage (LDM) is often called manual lymphatic drainage. This is massage with specialized techniques that have been developed to relieve painful swelling. Typically experienced by post-op and lymphoedema patients.
Many people seek lymphatic drainage massage during pre or post-surgery, typically following cosmetic surgery – to reduce fluid buildup, ensure optimal results, and reduce the risk of fibrosis.
Additionally, lymphatic drainage is required by Lymphoedema patients to ease symptoms. Lymphoedema is a chronic condition that creates swelling in the body’s tissues. It develops when the lymphatic system is struggling to regulate. The lymphatic system is a network of glands throughout the entire body which remove excess fluid and fight infection. Often something is disrupting your body’s ability to clear these areas. This allows the fluid to build up, commonly in your arms or legs and they become swollen. This can lead to a reduced range of movement due to the limbs feeling heavy and tight.
A lymphatic drainage massage treatment involves stages:
- Clearing: Releases the fluid in the local tissues.
- Reabsorption: Moves the fluid toward the lymph node to clear it.
