We’ve just had a piping hot summer and it has been uncomfortable to be exercising in that kind of heat. Autumn is the perfect time of the year to do activity outside when it’s a bit cooler.

Plus, staying active is a good habit to form before the holiday season arrives. The Christmas chocolates are already in stock. So now is the idea time to exercise before the cupboards get stuffed with chocolates in November and December.

Another reason it’s important to keep active in Autumn is keeping active releases those feel-good hormones and a lack of sunshine can reduce the happy hormones. So, getting out to exercise will effect how you feel leading into the winter.

…Which is why sticking to your active habits (or even starting them right now) is a great idea to help make heading into the Winter and whole lot easier.

Keeping active will also reduce the joint aches and stiffness associated with the cold weather. And is great for things like keeping control of your blood pressure.

So now you’re hopefully convinced, Lets get to it 😉

So we’re just a few weeks away from the clocks going back. And for some people that knocks them completely off track.

6 Simple Fun Ways To Stay Active This Autumn

  1. Join a walking group. There’s nothing like joining up with other people to make sure that you start and stick to a new exercise routine. Autumn is the most beautiful time of the year for walks. And with so many people working from home joining a group is a nice way to get to know a new social circle.

  1. Start a new activity– If you want to keep warm and avoid the winter chill consider keeping warm and starting an activity like table tennis you can do at the local leisure center.

  1. Warm walks – I bet your thinking this can’t be done at this time of year. But honestly even a nice walk around a shopping center lets you get lots of steps in and keep warm and maybe even get some Christmas ideas for others or yourself 😊

4. Coastal walk – I grew up beside the coast in Ireland enjoying regular walks and jogs along the roads that hug the sea front. Everyone nips to the coast during the summer when it’s absolutely packed. But this time of year, it’s perfect for coastal walks. The sea is more active, and the weather is perfect for walking, and it’ll be quite and relaxing and a total escape. The kids are back at school so . . . take full advantage of the peace.

5. Exercise Class – Try a new class you’ve never tried before. Pilates, yoga or maybe even a dance class like Zumba. Now is the ideal time to sign up before all the classes fill in January with everyone’s new year resolutions starting.

6. Up Your Activity Levels At Home

Let’s be realistic despite your good intentions, chances are you’ll be spending more time indoors over the next few months than outdoors – it happens to pretty much all of us.

However, that doesn’t mean your activity levels have to drop – as long as you remember to add some incidental exercise into your day.

If you’re struggling to keep as active as you would like, or you’ve got a got a stiff achy back or legs we can assess you and prescribe you some specific exercises to make your joints feel better and keep you fit and active during the winter months.
