Are you worried your knee pain may get in the way of your busy festive plans?
This blog will focus on some simple ways to get rid of knee pain so you can enjoy Christmas pain-free.
Common Causes of Knee Pain
We help people with knee pain in clinic every day. There are lots of reasons your knee can hurt, but some are much more common. One of the most common reasons people come to see us with knee pain is due to arthritis.
Knee Pain Related Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is frequent in people 50+ in the UK and the knee is the most common joint to be affected with Osteoarthritis.
It’s simply your joint becoming stiff and painful. Many people notice an ache on the stairs or walking downhill, or some knee stiffness for the first few steps after sitting for long periods.
Some people have been told it’s just an age thing but we have worked with 100’s of people with arthritis that have managed to dramatically reduce their knee pain and stiffness though therapy and physio exercise.
Incorrect Foot Positioning Causing Knee Pain
Did you know that your feet may be contributing to your knee pain?
If your feet aren’t in the correct position, it can imbalance the forces in your ankles, knees and hips.
Many people with knee arthritis have more wear on the inside of their knee and a poor foot position can increase the load on the inside of the knee, making your pain much worse than it needs to be.
How to Eliminate Knee Pain
Orthotics
A natural solution to knee pain can come from custom orthotics which correct muscular imbalances and reduce the forces on the worn area in your knee, making you more comfortable.
Orthotics are simply an insole that fits into your shoes and can help stabilise the distribution of weight across your knee. A great advantage to arthritis specific orthotic insoles is that they’re easy to use and tailored to the issue you are facing. This can massively speed up recovery and improvements can be noticed within a few weeks of use.
Our orthotics are:
- A Clinically Proven Fix
- Registered medical device
- Machine washable
- Will never need replacing!
- Developed by UK Podiatrists in conjunction with Salford University
If you decide to use orthotic insoles, another benefit is that you should notice that you experience less fatigue. This will be great at Christmas when you’re walking around Manchester Christmas markets or the shops getting last minute presents!
Low Impact Activities
Another great way to improve knee pain is to do some low-impact exercise. Low impact exercises put much less stress on your knee which makes them a great place to start. Some examples of this include swimming, walking and yoga.
Swimming is very friendly to your knees, as your knee is unloaded as you glide (or if you’re like me slightly thrash through the water). Walking in water for short distances is helpful if your knee can’t tolerate walking on land.
Maybe you’ve tried to get fit and into exercise before and been frustrated because your knee pain has flared up and stopped you doing what you want to do. If that’s the case, then easy low impact exercises like these are a great place to start.
Regular low impact activities will start to build up and strengthen the muscles around your knee. This supports your knee better and is good for the health of your knee. As the muscles get stronger, you’ll be able to notice you can start to do more activities.
